Newswise — ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers offer the best care in Michigan and are among the nation’s best in 12 specialty areas, according to a new ranking from U.S. News & World Report.

This is the second year in a row that U-M has topped the statewide ranking, and the third that it has also topped the Metro Detroit ranking.

For the 20th straight year, UMHHC has achieved high national stature in a broad range of specialty care areas, based on a combination of specific data measures and reputation among specialty physicians nationwide.

This year, only 147 of the nation’s more than 3,000 hospitals achieved a top-tier ranking in even one specialty. U-M did so in 12 of the 16 areas U.S. News examines, and was rated as “high performing” in the other four. See the full rankings here.

The new rankings follow other recent national recognitions of the U-M Health System’s health care excellence.

Both U.S. News and Parents Magazine recently rated U-M’s C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital as one of the best children’s hospitals in the country. Last month, Truven Health presented UMHS with a special Everest Award, given to a select few of its list of 100 Top Hospitals. Last December, UMHS was named one of the Leapfrog Group’s Top Hospitals, based on a wide range of quality and patient safety measures.

“All of us involved in patient care at U-M take pride in this broad range of national accolades, which together signal our devotion to excellence and our commitment to constant improvement,” says Doug Strong, M.B.A., director and chief executive officer of the U-M Hospitals and Health Centers. “We’re always seeking new ways to improve our performance on all types of measures, and to measure additional aspects of care.”

“Two decades of broad-based recognition by U.S. News, and other organizations demonstrate our leadership on a national level,” says Ora Hirsch Pescovitz, M.D., CEO of the U-M Health System and U-M’s executive vice president for medical affairs. “I congratulate our faculty and staff for achieving such sustained excellence, which gives patients and their families confidence in choosing us for all types of care and brings great pride to Michigan.”
