Newswise — A new JAMA Pediatrics study shows that artificially sweetened beverages in pregnancy are associated to higher infant weight. Dr. Cambria Garell,an assistant clinical professor of pediatrics and associate medical director for the UCLA Fit for a Healthy Weight program is available to comment.

Quote from Dr. Cambria Garell:"This study shows a correlation, but not causation. Mothers who drank more artificially sweetened beverages were also more likely to be overweight, breastfeed for less, and introduce solids earlier all of which are associated with childhood overweight/obesity. However, I think this study adds to the growing body of evidence that artificial sweeteners are certainly not any better than sugar sweetened beverages and in general the healthiest beverage option is water!"
