Newswise — Girls in grades seven through 10 will visit the campus of the University of Missouri-Rolla this summer to make shoes they can wear out of paper and build motorized Lego vehicles. It's all part of an attempt to encourage more female students to pursue degrees and careers in engineering and the sciences. UMR's Summer Solutions Camp is for girls in the ninth and tenth grades and will be held June 18-22. Campers will learn about various engineering and science majors at UMR. Applications are available at http://wise.umr.edu/precollege_summer/solutions.html . UMR's "It's a Girl Thing" camp is for girls in the seventh and eighth grades and will be held June 25-27. This three-day camp is designed to provide a fun introduction to engineering, science and technology. Applications are available at http://wise.umr.edu/precollege_summer/its_a_girl_thing.html . Both camps feature hands-on projects, design-oriented competitions, collaborative learning, social activities and interaction with UMR students and professors. The camps are intended to help the students as they start to prepare for college.
