University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Offers Experts on Holiday Retail Practices, Economic Trends

With the holidays just around the corner, retailers are gearing up for the influx of shoppers who will flood their stores in search of sales or the perfect gift.

Some merchants plan to open as early as 6 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day in hopes of luring in more shoppers—a departure from the typical Thursday evening or Black Friday start.

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, has three faculty experts who engage in research on retail practices and economic trends.

• Ann Fairhurst, interim head of the Department of Retail, Hospitality, and Tourism Management and professor in Retail and Consumer Sciences, can discuss holiday sales projections and consumer and retailer thoughts on the upcoming season. [email protected] or 865-974-6609.

• Bill Fox, director of the UT Center for Business and Economic Research and professor in the Department of Economics, can discuss general economic and consumption trends. [email protected] or 865-974-6112.

• Matt Murray, associate director of the UT Center for Business and Economic Research and professor in the Department of Economics, can discuss why retailers are opting to open much earlier and whether it will impact sales and shopper spending. [email protected] or 865-974-6084.
