As Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump prepares to give his immigration policy speech, UNLV political science professor John Tuman is uniquely positioned to discuss this issue in today's political landscape.

Tuman, who is also chairman of UNLV’s political science department, is an expert on Latin America, with a focus on Mexico, NAFTA, and the Mexican and North American automobile industries. Tuman also has researched Latin American immigration and political and civic engagement among Latin American immigrants and Latinos in the United States. He is the author of numerous works on Latinos and Latin American immigrants in Nevada.

Immigration policy, specifically the threat of deportation of undocumented Latino immigrants will drive the Latino vote this election cycle, Tuman explained. “It’s consistently in the top two or three issues among Latinos,” Tuman said. “Many people in Nevada are foreign-born and tend to know people from Mexico who are not documented and may be at risk of deportation. For that reason, immigration reform continues to resonate among them in the United States and in Nevada.”
