Newswise — David Abney, chief executive officer of UPS, was re-elected chairman of the World Affairs Council of Atlanta at the Council’s June 15 board meeting. Clyde Tuggle, The Coca Cola Company’s chief public affairs and communications officer, was elected vice-chair. The Council’s Executive Committee is composed of Abney, Tuggle, Mark Becker, president of Georgia State University, Rich Phillips, dean of J. Mack Robinson College of Business at Georgia State, and (founding chairman) Dennis Lockhart, president and chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. Jackie Royster, dean of the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts at Georgia Institute of Technology, joined the Council’s board. Gandy Thomas, consul general of Haiti, will join the board in July when he becomes dean of the consular corps, an ex officio position on the Council’s board. Current dean Paul Gleeson, consul general of Ireland, was honored during the board meeting for his years of dedication and support to the Council. The World Affairs Council board meeting was followed by a dinner honoring Dr. Helene Gayle, president and chief executive officer of CARE. Gayle, a founding board member of the Council, will continue to serve on the board from Washington, D.C., when she becomes the inaugural chief executive officer of the McKinsey Social Initiative. The World Affairs Council of Atlanta is a membership and grant supported, non-partisan organization affiliated with Georgia State University, the J. Mack Robinson College of Business and the World Affairs Councils of America. Its mission is to provide a forum for dialogue, a source of expertise and an engine for research on international affairs and global issues that affect Atlanta and the world.
