The Supreme Court will be handing down decisions in high-profile cases in the next few weeks, including Obergefell v. Hodges, which aims to clarify states’ rights in recognizing same-sex marriages.

Michael Higdon, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, director of legal writing and associate professor of law, is an expert on issues related to LGBTQ rights and same-sex marriage. His scholarship in this area has been published in several journals, including the Georgia Law Review, the UC Davis Law Review, the Wake Forest Law Review, and the Indiana Law Journal. Hidgon's scholarship focuses on the stigmatizing effects that discriminatory laws pose to the LGBTQ community. Having taught family law for nearly a decade, Higdon can address the changing definition of family in American jurisprudence and notes, "Win or lose, Obergefell v. Hodges will no doubt be only the first of many legal questions that the Supreme Court will ultimately have to answer concerning the civil rights of LGBTQ families."
