Newswise — TOLEDO, Ohio, June 29, 2016 – On July 1, the Academic Affiliation between The University of Toledo (UT) College of Medicine and Life Sciences and ProMedica marks a major milestone since the signing of the affiliation as the first class of new residents, student learners and faculty begin training and clinical rotations at ProMedica Toledo and Toledo Children’s Hospitals.

This is the first phase of learner integration planned by the organizations as part of the Academic Affiliation. During the next three – five years, more than 200 UT College of Medicine and Life Sciences faculty members, 300 residents and 700 medical students will be rotating through ProMedica Toledo Hospital and other learning environments throughout the ProMedica system every year.

“We are excited to have our learners and educators at ProMedica Toledo and Toledo Children’s Hospitals,” said Christopher J. Cooper, MD, dean of the UT College of Medicine and Life Sciences. “This partnership will enhance the training and education of students, residents and fellows as well as help recruit high-quality, nationally esteemed physicians and faculty members to northwest Ohio.”

To accommodate this growing number of learners and educators, the Academic Affiliation has renovated space at ProMedica Toledo and Toledo Children’s Hospitals to provide multimedia classrooms, on-call rooms and a learner lounge, as well as administrative office space for UT College of Medicine and Life Sciences faculty.

“We are focused on transforming ProMedica Toledo and Toledo Children’s Hospitals into a premier academic medical center,” said Holly Bristoll, MBA, chief integration officer for academic affiliations at ProMedica. “Our emphasis is on expanding clinical services and programs as well as identifying and developing unique areas of research and innovation to enhance medical education and patient care in northwest Ohio.”

Since finalizing the Academic Affiliation in August 2015, teams from the UT College of Medicine and Life Sciences and ProMedica have been working collaboratively on the 50-year relationship. In addition to academics and research, the Academic Affiliation will facilitate community revitalization and economic development opportunities.
