Newswise — William Margolin, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) Medical School, has been selected to serve as a distinguished lecturer for the American Society for Microbiology (ASM).
Margolin’s laboratory is working to further the understanding of how bacteria – like Escherichia coli (E. coli) – divide and multiply in the hopes of identifying better strategies to contain destructive strains.
Margolin’s duties as a distinguished lecturer extend through June of 2016 and include making presentations at regional meetings of the ASM. The society was founded in 1899 and is the largest single life science membership organization with 39,000 members.
The ASM’s Distinguished Lecturers are chosen through a competitive nomination process. Orators must have outstanding speaking ability and be nominated for the position. They must also demonstrate a commitment to educating students, postdoctoral fellows and trainees at all levels.
In the last 20 years, lecturers have delivered more than 500 talks to thousands of meeting attendees.
Margolin received his doctoral degree at the University of Wisconsin and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University. He is on the faculty of The University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Houston.
