Dr. Lisa Fortier, an equine veterinarian and scientist at Cornell University, believes that options for ensuring the health and safety of horses and preserving the iconic New York City carriage horse tradition exist.
Fortier says:
“With creative thinking, rather than the elimination of the more than 200 horses that comprise the historic carriage horse industry, a realistic, healthy and safe resolution for animals and people could be found.
“If city officials could gather the industry leaders and animal health specialists, I have no doubt we could develop new routes and improved foot paths that could protect these animals and preserve an iconic part of the flavor of one of the world’s greatest cities.”
