LUCENT TECHNOLOGIES WINS EMMY AWARD FOR WORK ON DIGITAL TV

MURRAY HILL, N.J. -- Lucent Technologies will receive a Primetime Engineering Emmy Award from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in ceremonies in Beverly Hills, Calif., Thursday (July 10) for its work on digital television as part of the High-Definition TV (HDTV) Grand Alliance. The award will be presented to Lucent for the contributions its Microelectronics Group and Bell Labs have made to developing the technology upon which the new U.S. standard for over-the-air digital TV (DTV) broadcasting is based. Other members of the Grand Alliance are General Instrument Corp., the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Philips Electronics North America Corp., Sarnoff Corp., Thomson Consumer Electronics, and Zenith Electronics Corp. In addition to working with its Grand Alliance partners, Lucent is working with companies in the home-entertainment industry to move DTV technology from the laboratory to the marketplace. "Bell Labs has a history of outstanding achievements in video compression that have contributed significantly to worldwide standards such as MPEG, and weÃre delighted to have been a part of the team that redefined television for the next 50 years," said Bell.
