Newswise — The Center for Retailing and Consumer Sciences at The University of Arizona in Tucson will be named in honor of UA alumnus Terry J. Lundgren. The center is a part of the UA John and Doris Norton School of Family and Consumer Sciences.
Lundgren is the chairman and president/CEO of Federated Department Stores. A native of Long Beach, Calif., Lundgren graduated from the UA in 1975 with a bachelor's degree in business. He gave the commencement address to the UA graduating class of 2000 when he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree.
"The naming of our center for this innovative leader has been in the works for three years and will help us build strategic alliances through expanding collaborative partnerships," said Melinda Burke, director of the center.
"We are honored to have the scale and scope of Mr. Lundgren's many accomplishments support our mission of developing future retail professionals," said Soyeon Shim, director of the Norton School.
Burke said Federated has been a valued member of the Center for Retailing and Consumer Sciences since 1993 and provides scholarships and career opportunities for students in the center's retailing and consumer sciences program. She also said Lundgren has made a substantial personal investment in the center through the UA Foundation.
Lundgren has been an active supporter of the center and the UA since 2001, Burke said. He has participated in the in the University's principal fund-raising effort, Campaign Arizona, and began serving on the Norton School's Campaign Cornerstone executive board in 2004. In May of that year, Lundgren was recognized with the "Alumni Achievement" Alumni Award from the University of Arizona. He currently serves as an honorary member of the Corporate Advisory Board for the Center.
"Terry Lundgren's contribution toward a new building has been instrumental in shaping the future of important research and outreach programs needed to effectively educate our students," said UA President Peter Likins.
Lundgren will be honored at a special reception at the center's annual Global Retailing Conference, April 13-16 in Tucson, where he will serve as the event's keynote speaker. The conference will include other retail industry leaders, including internationally noted designer Kenneth Cole.
