Newswise — The Trust for America's Health recent obesity report painted a harsh picture for the nation, particularly for Alabama and the Southeast. Seven of the top 10 states in adult obesity rates are in the South, with Mississippi ranked first and Alabama second. Nationally, obesity rates continue to skyrocket upward. "There are a number of factors that cause high obesity rates in the Southeast, including poor dietary habits, lack of physical activity and perhaps genetics, which means that the solution must be multifaceted as well," said Doug Heimburger, M.D., professor of nutrition sciences and medical director of UAB's EatRight program. Heimburger said education and increased awareness of health risks associated with obesity must start at the family level.
