Newswise — It can be challenging to eat healthfully during the holidays, but Dr. Amy Lanou, assistant professor of health and wellness at the University of North Carolina at Asheville, provides some useful suggestions.

"For a health promoting holiday season, center your meals around seasonal vegetables, fruits, whole grains and beans, and experiment with going meat-free this year," said Dr. Lanou. "Delight your family and guests with light and luscious dairy-free desserts to keep fat and cholestrol low and provide options for your lactose-intolerant and vegan guests."

Dr. Lanou holds a doctorate in Human Nutrition from Cornell University. Her research focuses on the connection between plant-based diets and the reduced risk of chronic diseases.
