Newswise — Burger King's expansion of their menu to include healthier food items arrives on the heels of an L.A. City Councilman's proposed two-year moratorium on fast food restaurants in South Los Angeles.

While it's great that fast food retailers are providing healthier food options, Nancy Childs, professor of food marketing at Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia, says that they aren't providing them in a cost-effective way.

"When you have a $4 salad and $1 whopper, you're not making food accessible to people of particular socioeconomic circumstances," she says.

Research has demonstrated that higher incidences of obesity have been associated with low-income neighborhoods. Of the proposed moratorium, Childs hopes to see an impact on improving this population's access to healthy food sources.
