Newswise — Montefiore Medical Center recently became the first hospital in the Northeast to implant a HeartNet cardiac restriction device in a patient, part of a study aimed at patients with advanced heart failure. The device is applied in a minimimally invasive procedure and through its unique properties the mesh "jacket" decreases wall stress and promotes reverse remodelling of an enlarged heart. Principal Investigator Dr. Simon Maybaum, Medical Director of Montefiore's Center for Advanced Cardiac Therapy, believes the device may be a good option for patients with cardiomyopathy, left ventricular dysfunction and dilation. Montefiore has been selected as the only site in New York for this novel trial, and there have been less than 15 implants nationwide so far. A patient will be available for interviews.

Bodybuilding Drugs for the Heart

Performance enhancing drugs are controversial in the world of sports today, but researchers at Montefiore Medical Center are showing that body building drugs can enhance the performance of a failing heart. Dr. Simon Maybaum, Director of the Center for Advanced Cardiac Therapy at Montefiore, has begun the second stage of studies using the body building drug Clenbuterol to treat patients with Congestive Heart Failure. The first stage has already shown promising results. Dr. Maybaum and patients will be available for interviews.
