Newswise — Flaming laptops make great news stories, but they're bad news for computer makers and computer users. Laptop battery life is a constant frustration--witness the travelers competing for scarce plugs in airport waiting areas. This is an industry waiting for change, but not necessarily expecting it.

Change is about to come, however, from a 40-year-old soccer mom, jazz singer, and research chemist. Since 2005, Christina Lampe-Onnerud has redesigned the traditional lithium-ion battery, started a company called Boston-Power, and raised $70 million to fund her dream. Now she has batteries rolling off manufacturing lines in China and Taiwan. They'll likely be shipped in laptops from major manufacturers this year. In the March issue of IEEE Spectrum, senior editor Tekla S. Perry tells all about Boston-Power's innovative technology and its dynamic founder.
