Newswise — The University of Maryland is celebrating 10 “Explore our World” years of Maryland Day – the university’s wildly popular open house. The April 26 festival will continue to offer the same family-friendly events it is known for - a day full of fun, learning and excitement. But there’s also something very special. Faculty, staff and student volunteers will be distributing 50,000 tasty cupcakes to celebrate! It’s first-come, first-served on Hornbake Plaza – so be sure to get your cupcake early. "Maryland Day has gone beyond my wildest dreams,” says University President Dan Mote, Jr., who proposed the creation of Maryland Day when he first took over as Maryland’s president in 1998. “The single most important thing about Maryland Day is that the campus has gotten so excited about it, committed to it and creative with it. That has led to more than 400 projects and programs – and the enthusiasm 8,000 volunteers bring to welcoming more than 77,000 visitors.” Dr. Mote and other dignitaries will take part in an opening ceremony at 10 a.m. in Hornbake Plaza – just outside the tent where 50,000 plus cupcakes will be distributed throughout the day. All over Maryland’s 1250 acre campus, there will be tours, exhibits, demonstrations, and the annual Red & White spring football game. All events run from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Everything is family friendly. Don’t miss a scoop of Maryland ice cream at the Dairy! Admission and parking are free, and there will be free shuttle buses to and from the College Park Metro and on campus. Navigation is easy with the help of complementary activity maps. Plan your day online at http://www.marylandday.umd.edu/, or email questions to: mddayhelp@umd.edu. NOTE: This year’s Maryland Day will be a green event throughout campus! After a successful test run last year, the university will once again use sugar cane based serving products that include Baltimore lemonade cups, snow cone cups, funnel cake plates and Crab Cake and Pork BBQ Platters, as well as all of the forks, knives and spoons. Composting bins will be part of the effort on McKeldin Mall.
