Dr. Mushabbar Syed at the University of Kentucky says an option to more accurately identify a patient's risk is a coronary calcium scan performed via commuted tomography (CT) imaging, which the university is helping to implement at rural hospitals.

Newswise — Cardiac CT and MRI allow experts to see inside the heart and vessels and structures in detail. In addition to constructing a large heart imaging center at the UK Gill Heart Institute, the University of Kentucky is offering more patients access to this technology through a new cardiac CT service that begins in a few days at Rockcastle Hospital in Mount Vernon, in Rockcastle County, Kentucky. As part of the university's outreach to rural areas of Kentucky, UK Gill Heart Institute physicians will begin Monday to work with radiologists on staff at Rockcastle Hospital to provide cardiac CT and coronary calcium scoring to their patients. The university is also building a large cardiac imaging center to provide the most detailed view of the heart possible. Dr. Syed is available to discuss this rural health initiative and/or the accuracy and importance of cardiac CT in diagnosing heart disease and its impact on treatment decisions.
