Newswise — The Institute of Nuclear Materials Management (INMM) will celebrate its 50th anniversary at the INMM 2008 Annual Meeting July 13-17, 2008, at the Nashville Convention Center and Renaissance Nashville Hotel, in Nashville, Tenn., USA:

INMM is an international professional society devoted to the advancement of responsible management of nuclear materials worldwide. Nearly 1,000 participants are expected at the conference, which will feature talks by more than 300 international and national leaders in nuclear materials management. Special sessions are planned on safeguards and security, nonproliferation and arms control, international safeguards, waste management, packaging and transportation, spent fuel, information surety, inspections, containment and surveillance, measurement technology, nuclear processing and physical protection.

In commenting on the past and present role of the Institute, Nancy Jo Nicholas, President of INMM, said that "We are working to make certain that the enormous potential benefits of the peaceful uses of nuclear energy can be fully realized to the long-term benefit of mankind, while minimizing the risks of nuclear proliferation, safety problems and negative environmental impacts."

The Institute's 1,100 members worldwide work to improve nuclear materials safeguards through technical advances in nuclear material control, physical protection of nuclear materials and facilities, international safeguards, and nuclear arms control. INMM also fosters technical advances in radioactive waste disposal and radioactive material transportation. The Institute has chapters in Austria, Japan, Korea, Russia, and the Ukraine, as well as regional and student chapters in the United States.
