Newswise — The International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS) is proud to announce its 2010 Clinical Scholar Research Awards, which will provide up to $320,000 towards anesthesia research. The awards will go to researchers whose projects are judged by peer review to have high scientific merit and high probability of success.

"The IARS created the Clinical Scholar Research Awards to further the understanding of clinical practice in anesthesiology through clinical investigations," said Dr. Hugo Van Aken, Chair of the IARS Research Awards Committee. "The research funded by these awards will ensure that patients who undergo anesthesia continue to receive the best possible care." IARS Executive Director Tom Cooper added, "Given the current economic conditions, it is essential that we continue to provide funding for high quality anesthesia research. This year the IARS has actually increased its research funding and will award over $1million through three separate grant programs."

The principal applicant must be an investigator with research experience who has yet to establish a history of substantial funding. Research must involve human subjects. Complete guidelines and an application are available at http://www.iars.org/awards/clinicals.asp. Award applications must be submitted by October 15, 2009.

The International Anesthesia Research Society is a nonpolitical, not-for-profit medical society founded in 1922 to encourage, stimulate, and fund ongoing anesthesia-related research that will enhance and advance the anesthesiology specialty. The IARS has a worldwide membership of 15,000 physicians, medical residents, and others with doctoral degrees, as well as health professionals in anesthesia-related practice.
