Newswise — Dr. Julie Ann Freischlag was elected 2010-2011 treasurer of the Society for Vascular Surgery® (SVS) during the Vascular Annual Meeting® on June 11, 2010. This marks her third year as treasurer. She is the surgeon-in-chief at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md. and the William Stewart Halsted professor and chair of the department of surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

“Dr. Freischlag’s contributions to the SVS and the specialty of vascular surgery are outstanding,” said Anton Robert Zwolak, MD, SVS president. “Her expertise as a skilled surgeon and her leadership in promoting the specialty to women, as well as representing women in the field, have significantly contributed to making the specialty and the SVS more inclusive and diverse.”

Dr. Freischlag is the editor of the Archives of Surgery and the associate editor of the American Journal of Surgery. She serves on the editorial boards of the Annuals of Vascular Surgery and Journal of the American College of Surgeons.

In addition to her dedication to the SVS, Dr. Freischlag is involved with the American College of Surgeons, American Medical Women’s Association, Association for Academic Surgery, Association of Women Surgeons, Chesapeake Vascular Society and the Society of Surgical Chairs.

She has served as the principal investigator on several major grants including the Open vs. Endo-Vascular Repair of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms Trial. Her research interests lie in the effects of smoking on arterial and venous endothelium causes of atherosclerosis and intimal dysplasia.

Dr. Freischlag earned her medical degree from Rush University in Chicago, Ill., and finished her vascular surgery fellowship at UCLA.
