UK geography professor Pradyumna P. Karan's, research focuses on development and environmental management and society-environment relationships in Japan and South Asia.

"The Indian Ocean Tsunami: The Global Response to a Natural Disaster," edited by Karan and released in January, documents the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami through a series of essays written by experts that range from Japanese scientists and German political scientists, to Australian public policy experts and French public health professionals.
