Newswise — Geneva, 4 August 2011. Today CERN launches its cultural policy for engaging with the arts. Called ‘Great Arts for Great Science’, this new cultural policy has a central strategy - a selection process for arts engagement at the level of one of the world's leading research organizations.
“This puts CERN’s engagement with the arts on a similar level as the excellence of its science,” said Ariane Koek, CERN's cultural specialist.
CERN’s newly appointed Cultural Board for the Arts will be the advisers and guardians of quality. It is made up of renowned cultural leaders in the arts from CERN's host-state countries: Beatrix Ruf, Director of the Kunsthalle Zurich; Serge Dorny, Director General of the Lyon Opera House; Franck Madlener, Director of the music institute IRCAM in Paris. Geneva and CERN are represented by Christoph Bollman of ArtbyGenève and Michael Doser, an antimatter scientist. Membership of the board is an honorary position that will change every three years.
The Cultural Board will select one or two art projects a year to receive a CERN letter of approval, enabling these projects to seek external funding for their particle-physics inspired work. This will also build up an international portfolio of CERN-inspired work over the years to come, in conjunction with the Collide@CERN Artists Residency Programme, details of which will be announced in the coming month.
Director General of CERN, Rolf Heuer, welcomed the new policy and Cultural Board. “Together science and the arts form culture - our expression of what it is to be human in our universe. Our work is in science, but when we engage with the arts, we want to ensure we approach the same level of quality,” he said.
As part of the new cultural policy, CERN is forming partnerships with leading international arts organizations. The first of these is the prestigious digital arts organization in Austria, Ars Electronica, which today is announcing CERN as the main focus in this year’s Ars Electronica Festival, entitled 'Origins'. Talks by CERN Director General, Rolf Heuer, spokesperson for the ATLAS experiment, Fabiola Gianotti, and CERN Director of Research and Scientific Computing, Sergio Bertolucci, together with other luminaries from the worlds of science and the arts, will feature in the festival’s symposium.
"We are very excited about the creative collisions that will come out of our cultural partnership with Ars Electronica and the festival this year. As one of the world's foremost digital arts origanizations, devoted to the intersection between technology, arts and society, the cultural partnership with Ars Electronica is a fantastic match for CERN,” said Michael Doser.

Genève, 4 août 2011. Le CERN lance aujourd’hui sa nouvelle politique culturelle marquant son engagement dans le monde des arts. Cette politique culturelle, qui s’accompagne du mot d’ordre « Des arts en grand pour la science en grand », est axée sur une stratégie centrale : la sélection de projets artistiques par l’une des plus éminentes organisations de recherche au niveau mondial.
« Cette démarche met l’engagement artistique du CERN à un niveau très élevé, à la hauteur de l’excellence de son activité scientifique », déclare Ariane Koek, spécialiste de la culture du CERN.
La nouvelle Commission culturelle pour l'art créée par le CERN jouera un rôle de conseil et de sauvegarde de la qualité. Elle est constituée de personnalités du monde de la culture issues des États hôtes de l’Organisation : Beatrix Ruf, directrice du Kunsthalle de Zurich; Serge Dorny, directeur de l’Opéra national de Lyon, Franck Madlener, directeur de l’Institut de recherche et coordination acoustique-musique (IRCAM) à Paris. Genève et le CERN sont représentés par Christoph Bollman d’Artbygenève et par Michael Doser, physicien spécialiste de l’antimatière. L’appartenance à la Commission est une mission bénévole ; la Commission sera renouvelée tous les trois ans.
La Commission culturelle choisira chaque année un ou deux projets artistiques, lesquels recevront du CERN une lettre d’approbation les autorisant à faire appel à des mécènes pour leurs œuvres inspirées par la physique des particules. Il se constituera ainsi au fil des années une collection internationale de travaux inspirés par le CERN, qui viendra compléter le programme des artistes en résidence Collide@CERN, dont le contenu sera dévoilé au cours du mois prochain.
Le Directeur général du CERN, Rolf Heuer, a salué la mise en place de cette nouvelle politique et de la Commission culturelle : « Mises ensemble, la science et l'art constituent la culture, c'est-à-dire notre expression de ce que c’est qu’être humain dans notre univers. Notre travail porte sur la science, mais quand nous nous intéressons à l’art, nous voulons tendre au même niveau de qualité. »
Dans le cadre de la nouvelle politique culturelle, le CERN établit des partenariats avec d’éminentes organisations artistiques au niveau international. La première est la prestigieuse organisation autrichienne spécialisée dans les arts numériques, Ars Electronica, qui annonce aujourd’hui que le CERN sera au centre de son festival de cette année, intitulé « Origines ». Lors du colloque organisé à cette occasion, on pourra entendre des interventions de Rolf Heuer, directeur général du CERN, de Fabiola Gianotti, porte-parole de l’expérience ATLAS, de Sergio Bertolucci, directeur de la recherche et de l’informatique scientifique, ainsi que d’autres personnalités des mondes de la science et de l’art.
