NASA Health Specialist Joins SWHR Board of Directors

Newswise — WASHINGTON, D.C. (February 6, 2012) – An endocrinologist, geriatrician, and women’s health specialist, Saralyn Mark, MD, joins the Society for Women’s Health Research Board of Directors for 2012. Mark was the first Senior Medical Advisor to the Office on Women’s Health within the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for ten years.

Mark brings decades of experience in the development and analysis of initiatives and programs on emerging technologies, public health preparedness, physician workforce issues, sex and gender-based medicine, and women’s health on earth and in space.

Currently President of SolaMed Solutions, LLC, Mark serves as a medical and scientific policy advisor to agencies including NASA, academia, industry, non-governmental, and professional organizations. She is the author of the newly-released book, Stellar Medicine: A Journey Through the Universe of Women’s Health, available for e-readers and at local bookstores. Stellar Medicine explores controversial health issues in the political and social environment that shapes these issues.

In addition, Mark is an Associate Professor Adjunct at the Yale University School of Medicine in the Departments of Medicine and Obstetrics and Gynecology as well as at the Georgetown University School of Medicine. She is an alumna of the New York University School of Medicine and Barnard College of Columbia University and completed her residency, fellowships, and first academic appointment at the University of California at San Francisco School of Medicine (UCSF).
