Educational program is next step in relationship launched earlier this year.
Newswise — The first medical symposium in Brazil presented by Hospitalys Ortopedia in Rio de Janeiro and New York City’s Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) will take place November 28 and 29 in Rio de Janeiro.
At the symposium, which is part of an ongoing agreement to share expertise, a panel of experts from both hospitals will offer orthopedic surgeons and physiotherapists the latest information on research and treatment topics in orthopedic surgery.
Dr. Scott Rodeo, co-chief of the Sports Medicine and Shoulder Service at Special Surgery; Dr. Mathias Bostrom, a specialist in hip and knee replacement; and Dr. Federico Gerardi, a spine surgeon, will be discussing various advances in their areas of expertise. Charles Fisher, a physical therapist from HSS, will also discuss rehabilitation.

Earlier this year, Hospital for Special Surgery, a world leader in orthopedics, rheumatology and related specialties, partnered with Amil Par, the largest, most widely-recognized and respected managed healthcare organization in Brazil, to provide expertise in connection with the opening of its new orthopedic center, Hospitalys Ortopedia, in Rio de Janeiro.
Hospitalys will open its initial phase in 2013 with specialization in spine disorders, joint replacement and sports medicine, orthopedic areas for which Hospital for Special Surgery is renowned.
Next steps planned for the multi-year collaboration include establishing joint advisory councils to oversee work in the areas of quality management, clinical pathways and research priorities. Additional initiatives will offer ongoing education and training through fellowships and continuing education programs in both countries as well as digital education through HSS e-University.
In addition, Rio has been named host city of the 2016 Olympic Games, as well as the 2014 World Cup, and Hospitalys aims to make sports medicine a focus of its efforts.
HSS orthopedists and sports medicine specialists served on the U.S. Olympic Committee medical staff team that covered the London Games in 2012, the Beijing Games in 2008 and the Athens Games in 2004. They look forward to similar roles in the 2016 Games. Currently, physicians from Hospital for Special Surgery are official physicians for major professional sports teams including the Super Bowl XLII Champion New York Football Giants, New York Mets, New York Knicks, New York Liberty Basketball and New York Red Bulls Soccer.
