Newswise — ROCHESTER, Minn. -- Mayo Clinic is being recognized this week as one of the top hospitals in the nation by the Leapfrog Group, an independent, national nonprofit organization run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits. Only 92 U.S. hospitals were named to the 2012 Top Hospitals list from a pool of about 1,200 vying for the award. Three from Mayo Clinic made the list:

*Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix, Ariz. *Mayo Clinic Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla. *Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

The selection is based on the results of the Leapfrog Group’s annual hospital survey, which measures hospitals’ performance on patient safety and quality by focusing on three areas of hospital care: how patients fare, resource use, and management structures in place to prevent errors. Survey results are posted online and are open to patients and families, the public, employers and other purchasers of health care.

“We continue to improve outcomes and safety for our patients through ongoing learning, process change and a culture of teamwork” says Paula Santrach, M.D., associate dean of value creation, Mayo Clinic. “Many efforts go into making Mayo Clinic a top choice for patients and it’s nice to be recognized by Leapfrog.”

Patient safety

Last week Leapfrog also recognized Mayo Clinic’s hospitals in Arizona, Florida and Rochester and two Mayo Clinic Health System hospitals that earned an “A” for patient safety. Mayo Clinic hospitals that received an “A” grade are:

*Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix, Ariz. *Mayo Clinic Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla. *Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn. *Rochester Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minn. *Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin, Minn. *Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont, Minn.

The Hospital Safety Score uses 26 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single grade that is intended to reflect a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe from infections, injuries and errors.

“This recognition was reached due to the commitment and hard work of our dedicated providers, nurses and allied health staff across Mayo Clinic hospitals,” says Michael Rock, M.D., associate dean of hospital practice, Mayo Clinic.

Leapfrog is one of many ranking groups that recognize Mayo Clinic as a top choice for patients.
