A week-long celebration, April 13-19, highlights the Inauguration theme:"A New Era of Opportunities: Teaching, Service, and Student Research"
Newswise — University of the Sciences will inaugurate Helen F. Giles-Gee, PhD, as the University’s 22nd president during a ceremony at its Athletic/Recreation Center (45th Street at Woodland Avenue, Philadelphia) on Friday, April 19, 2013, at 1 p.m.
In honor of Dr. Giles-Gee’s inauguration, USciences has a week-long celebration planned from April 13-19, 2013, highlighting the inauguration theme: "A New Era of Opportunities: Teaching, Service, and Student Research." The inauguration ceremony is the signature event that follows a series of distinguished lectures, research presentations, and a health fair, as well as a celebration marking the anniversary of Title IX. On the evening of April 19, the University will celebrate with an Inaugural Gala that benefits the President’s Fund for Student Research.

• Saturday, April 13, from 9 a.m. to Noon – Community Service Project: As part of Student Appreciation Weekend, students, faculty, staff, and alumni will partner with UC Green on a community service project featuring a neighborhood cleanup and tree-planting.
• Monday, April 15, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. – Misher Festival Visiting Professor Lecture and Reception: In Griffith Hall A, Millikin University Humanities Professor Daniel Monroe will present “Lincoln and Emancipation: Reflections after 150 Years,” a discussion of how the president’s leadership embodies hope for the future.
• Tuesday, April 16, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. – Making the Connections: The New 4Ps of CER (Comparative Effectiveness Research): Pharma, Payer, Provider, & Patient: In the McNeil Science and Technology Center, an expert panel will examine the perspectives of major CER stakeholders.
• Thursday, April 18, 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. – 11th Annual Research Day with the 26th Annual John C. Krantz Jr. Lecture and Reception: In Wilson Hall, Dr. Robert Blouin, Dean of the University of North Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy in Chapel Hill, will give a lecture entitled “Integration of the Education and Research Missions: Optimizing Impact in Health Science Professions.” Later, the Athletic/Recreation Center will host a showcase of undergraduate, graduate, and faculty presentations demonstrating the breadth of USciences’ campus research pursuits.
• Friday, April 19 – Inauguration Ceremony from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Athletic/Recreation Center and Black Tie Gala in the McNeil Science and Technology Center and the Wilson Student Center, from 6 to 11 p.m.Dr. Giles-Gee, who began her USciences tenure on July 16, 2012, is a higher education veteran with a career that spans 30 years. She has previously served as president of Keene State College in New Hampshire; provost of Rowan University in New Jersey; dean of the School of Professional Studies at SUNY-Courtland in New York; associate vice chancellor for academic affairs and director of articulation of the University System of Maryland; and executive assistant to the president at Towson State University, also in Maryland. She sits on numerous national, state, and local boards, including the Association of American Colleges and Universities, Society for College and University Planning, and Campus Compact.
Dr. Giles-Gee’s academic and professionals awards include a commendation from the Governor of New Hampshire for her leadership and The Mary McLeod Bethune Award from the Philadelphia PA Section of the National Council of Negro Women, Inc. An Alabama native, she holds a bachelor of arts in psychobiology, a master of science in science education, and a PhD in measurement, evaluation, and techniques of experimental research from the University of Pennsylvania, as well as an MS in zoology from Rutgers University. Dr. Giles-Gee is a published author who has written book chapters and numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals.
