Newswise — Wilmington, NC (July 24, 2013) - Registration is now open for the first Color Me Rad 5K in Wilmington hosted by the University of North Carolina Wilmington on October 20, 2013, the University announced today. Last year more than 200,000 runners participated in Color Me Rad events, in 36 cities across the U.S. and Canada. Whether walking or running, every 15-20 minutes, participants are doused with “color bombs.” Of course, "UNCW teal" will be a featured color in the October 20th event. Spearheaded by UNCW Athletics, a portion of the proceeds from the run will go to support student-athlete scholarships, which offer deserving student-athletes the opportunity to be exemplary representatives of the Wilmington community. “Partnering with the Color Me Rad 5K is an exciting opportunity for UNCW and the Wilmington community,” said Rob Aycock, executive director of the Seahawk Club. “The Seahawk Club is a critical source of support for our current student-athletes and also contributes to our success in recruiting future Seahawks from across the country. Even if people aren't able to participate in the race, we hope they'll take a moment to click and offer support for our programs." The mission of the Seahawk Club is to strengthen and develop the athletic programs at UNCW by raising funds to support athletic scholarships and the improvement of facilities. The Seahawk Club strives to provide scholarships for approximately 360 student-athletes each year. In the past year, UNCW athletic teams have averaged a 3.12 GPA, have contributed 2,045 hours of community service and have achieved much athletic success. Those who register before August 9 will pay a fee of $30 and can receive an additional 10% off by using the promotion code “UNCW." The Color Me Rad 5K will take place throughout the UNCW campus on October 20, 2013 starting at 9 a.m. with waves of 1,000 people taking off every 20 minutes. Participants of all ages are encouraged to run or walk through the colors. Entrants can register now or up to the day of the run. The UNCW promotional code can be applied to the fee at any time.
