Art Wheaton, automotive industry expert and senior extension associate at the Cornell University ILR School, says while groundbreaking, GM’s decision to select Mary Barra as CEO is a smart business decision.

Wheaton says:

“GM made automotive history by selecting Mary Barra as the first female Detroit Three CEO. Mary Barra has held numerous and key positions within GM for 30 years.

“This is a good decision for GM as it ends the ‘Government Motors’ stigma with some positive news. Auto purchases are frequently made or impacted by women and Mary Barra has been the executive in charge of developing new products for GM.

“Best wishes to GM and to Mary Barra.”
