Newswise — LEAWOOD, KS — As the world watches elite athletes compete at the Sochi 2014 Winter Games, behind the scenes, they are being cared for by experts in sports medicine. Sports medicine physician members of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) are spending a month in Sochi, Russia, to serve as medical staff for the US and Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Teams. In order to provide optimal care for the athletes, members are working on various multidisciplinary medical teams stationed throughout the Olympic Village.

While physician members serving at the 2014 Olympic Games may not be available for comment, AMSSM has additional member experts in winter sports injury prevention and treatment available for interviews as well as members who have served on medical staff for the Games in the past. To schedule an interview with an expert, contact Jessica Torres-Sosa, Communications Manager, at [email protected] or by calling 913-327-1415.

AMSSM is a multi-disciplinary organization of 2,500 sports medicine physicians dedicated to education, research, advocacy and the care of athletes of all ages. AMSSM members serve as team physicians at the youth level, NCAA, NFL, MLB, NBA, WNBA, MLS and NHL, as well as with the US Olympic Team. By nature of their training and experience, sports medicine physicians are ideally suited to provide comprehensive medical care for athletes, sports teams and active individuals.
