Newswise — New York University’s Georgiou Library and Resource Center for Children and Literature has received a $1.3 million gift from the E.H.A. Foundation.
The facility, part of NYU’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, is exclusively devoted to children’s literature and holds nearly 3,500 volumes.
The gift has been used to create the Linda May Uris Library Media Specialist at the Georgiou Library and Resource Center, which is open to NYU faculty and students, families from the community, and researchers from around the globe.
Kendra Tyson, the Linda May Uris Library Media Specialist, manages the center’s collection and provides services to its patrons in addition to leading its public outreach efforts. Tyson, who has held the position since November 2013, was previously manager for exhibition programs, digital assets, and archive management in Education at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where she worked for a decade.
The Georgiou Library and Resource Center for Children and Literature was established in 2002 under a gift from the E.H.A. Foundation. It is named after Constantine Georgiou (1927-2009), a professor in NYU Steinhardt’s Department of Teaching and Learning for more than 50 years as well as a children’s book editor and author. A specialist in Mother Goose books, Georgiou, who received a Presidential Citation from President Bill Clinton in 1997, was recognized as a foremost expert in the field of children’s literature. E.H.A.’s president, Linda Sanger, earned her Ph.D. from NYU Steinhardt, completing her dissertation under Georgiou’s supervision.
The Georgiou Library and Resource Center contains several categories of children’s literature, including counting books, fairy tales, poetry, biography, and holiday books. It also houses Mother Goose books geared for African, Chinese and Russian audiences, bi-lingual counting books, and the Metropolitan Museum’s of Art’s Museum ABC (Little Brown, 2002), which portrays a range of world cultures through its collections.
