Newswise — BINGHAMTON, NY – Binghamton University’s Innovation Day 2014 - Big Data, Making Sense of our World, will feature nationally known speakers, state government representatives and Binghamton University experts discussing what Big Data means for consumers, businesses and government. The event will take place April 24, at Binghamton University’s Innovative Technologies Complex, 85 Murray Hill Road, Vestal.
More data has been captured in the last two years than in the previous 2,000 years. This trove of information grows by the minute, and its use presents exciting possibilities as well as ethical and privacy challenges.
“Binghamton University has strong ties with government and industry and is a resource for best practices involving data collection, storage and use,” said Per Stromhaug, executive director of Binghamton University’s Entrepreneurship and Innovation Partnerships Office. “That’s why Innovation Day 2014 is focusing on significant developments in Big Data. It’s a hot topic in technology today, with important implications in fields ranging from healthcare to finance.”
The University’s Office of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Partnerships is co-sponsoring Innovation Day 2014 along with Binghamton’s Center of Excellence.
The event will feature such prominent speakers as Katharine Frase, vice president and chief technology officer of IBM’s Global Public Sector Division; Scott Zeger, vice provost for research at Johns Hopkins University; and Hao Wang, chief information officer and vice president for information services for the Research Foundation of the State University of New York.
Binghamton University President Harvey Stenger and Binghamton Vice President for Research Bahgat Sammakia will also speak. A complete list of speakers and participants will be available soon.
The schedule includes panel discussions, presentations, a student poster session and an iPad giveaway. The event will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a reception and tours available at the end of the day.
