LOUIS -- Saint Louis University’s program in physical therapy is partnering with SSM Physical Therapy to offer a post-professional residency program in orthopedic physical therapy.The year-long residency prepares physical therapists to specialize in evaluating, treating and managing patients who have orthopedic problems.
“The SLU-SSM orthopedic physical therapy residency will advance the practice of physical therapy by specialized training of licensed physical therapists, preparing them for board certification in orthopedic physical therapy,” says Chris Sebelski, DPT, assistant professor of physical therapy at SLU, and director of the new orthopedic physical therapy residency program.
“The education of each resident will emphasize accelerating the development of clinical skills through reflective and evidence based reasoning. The program focuses on mentoring by advanced orthopedic physical therapists and engaging in the care of diverse patient population between SSM Physical Therapy, the SLU Physical Therapy clinic, and pro bono care in community outreach clinics.”
Unique to the SLU-SSM residency program, the residents will serve as lab instructors for entry-level physical therapy courses at SLU. Additional opportunities include shadowing of orthopedic surgeons, small group study format and mentoring by both SLU physical therapy faculty and SSM physical therapists.
The program consists of direct clinical mentoring, non-mentored patient care, clinical observation, lab instruction and teaching responsibilities, independent mentorship and providing pro bono services in the St. Louis community.
“The residency program will develop strong clinicians who are skilled in efficient and effective patient care, achieve strong interprofessional relationships, and become leaders within our profession,” added SSM Physical Therapy’s Jill Eveker, DPT, associate residency program director.
“It serves as a means to recruit exemplary clinicians and continue to provide a high level of care for patients. Our partnership with Saint Louis University is significant in creating a diverse educational program with a culture of academic excellence.”
