Georgia State experts are available by email to comment on today's presidential election in Syria.

Henry “Chip” Carey, an associate professor of political science, said the “elections in Syria are not feasible or fair."

“They represent an attempt to legitimate a regime,” Carey said. “Such votes are often held during wartime and they are always controversial because of the inability to campaign openly. While it is possible to imagine elections that might be less incredible than others, perhaps as war subsides and voting is restricted in a few areas, as in Iraq and Afghanistan, but the war in Syria is far too pervasive currently.”

Carey is an expert on elections and democratization. He has worked for four national campaigns. He recently wrote two books focusing on foreign policy, including “Privatizing the Democratic Peace: Policy Dilemmas of NGO Peacebuilding” and “Reaping What You Sow: A Comparative Examination of Torture Reform in the United States, France, Argentina, and Israel.”
