Newswise — June 3, 2014 (Greenwich, CT) - On Monday, June 9, Greenwich Hospital will hold its annual Diabetes Health Fair. The event will take place from 4-7 pm in the hospital’s Noble Conference Center, 5 Perryridge Road, Greenwich, CT.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), diabetes affects 25.8 million people, or 8.3 percent, of the country’s population. While 18.8 million people have been diagnosed, there are seven million nationwide who are living with undiagnosed diabetes. The seventh leading cause of death in the U.S., diabetes, when left untreated, can lead to severe health complications, including:

• Kidney failure
• Lower-limb amputations
• Blindness
• Heart disease
• Stroke

Thirty-five percent of adults in U.S. have prediabetes, a precursor that can often be reversed through lifestyle changes.

The Diabetes Health Fair at Greenwich Hospital is an opportunity for people to speak to diabetes educators and healthcare professionals about all aspects of diabetes treatment and prevention, including nutrition and meal planning, self-monitoring, new medications, special equipment and preventing complications. Participants can also learn how exercise, sleep and stress affects people with diabetes differently than those without the condition. Also on hand will be vendors with information about diabetes-related products and services, from glucose testing and medications to insulin pumps and community resources.

The event is free and open to the public. Walk-ins are welcome. For information, call (203) 863-3929 or visit www.greenwichhospital.org/calendar.
