June 24, 2014 (Washington, D.C.) – Israeli President Shimon Peres’s visit to the White House this week will press President Obama to release convicted Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard. Peres’s agenda will also include other priorities such as renewing international support in the fight against terrorism, jump starting the stalled Middle East Peace Process, and pressuring Iran to abandon its nuclear program. American University Israel experts below are available to discuss Peres’s final official trip to Washington.
Guy Ziv, American University School of International Service professor, is an expert on U.S. foreign policy decision-making and the role of political elites in the Arab-Israeli conflict. In particular, Ziv’s research includes the impact of Israel’s nuclear policy on U.S.-Israel relations and the role of leaders’ personalities in foreign policy change. Ziv is currently in Israel as director of AU’s Summer Abroad in Israel Program. Ziv’s op-eds have appeared in both American and Israeli newspapers, such as Haaretz, The Jerusalem Post, Newsday, USA Today, and Ynet News. Dan Arbell, American University Center for Israeli Studies scholar-in-residence, is a 25 year veteran of the Israeli Foreign Service, serving in senior posts overseas in the UN, the United States and Japan, in addition to holding senior positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jerusalem. Arbell can discuss President Shimon Peres’s impact on issues of Israeli security and peace and whether his legacy for peace with the Palestinians will carry on.
