Ross Brann, is a professor of Judeo-Islamic studies at Cornell University and author of the book “Power in the Portrayal: Representations of Muslims and Jews in Islamic Spain.” He points out a disparity in draft legislation by the Spanish government that would grant dual citizenship to those who can prove themselves to be descendants of expelled Jews during the Edict of Expulsion in 1492.

He says:

“Since the idea of the Spanish legislation is to right the wrong done to one of the minority populations of pre-modern Spain it is ironic that the initiative does not include another group that eventually suffered the same fate: descendants of Iberian Muslims and those originally of Muslim background - moriscos - who were coerced or forced to into exile during the end of the fifteenth century to shortly after the turn of the seventeenth in the ongoing effort to ‘purify’ the country of ‘foreign blood.’”
