Newswise — BOSTON – (July 14, 2014) – Edward Horton, M.D., Senior Investigator at Joslin Diabetes Center and Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, received the Master of the American College of Endocrinology (MACE) Award at the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) 23rd Annual Scientific & Clinical Congress in Las Vegas this past May.
The MACE Award is given to an AACE member who has obtained the Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology (FACE) distinction, is recognized as a distinguished practicing endocrinologist, serves as a role model for developing endocrinologists, and is a contributor to AACE and to the art and science of endocrinology.
“Only about 40 such awards have been given since they were established in the 1990s, so it is a special honor to receive one of them at this stage of my career,” said Dr. Horton. “I feel doubly honored to have received both the MACE award from ACE and the Albert Renold award from the ADA this year, both of which are tributes to my contributions to research, teaching and training of younger physicians and scientists over the years.”
Dr. Horton is a renowned investigator of obesity and insulin resistance as they relate to diabetes and cardiovascular disease, the regulation of glucose transport and metabolism in skeletal muscle and adipose tissue, and the effects of exercise and physical training on insulin sensitivity.
In addition to serving as a Senior Investigator, Dr. Horton is the Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator for several large National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded studies, such as the Diabetes Prevention Program, the LookAHEAD Study and a Study of Diabetes, Cardiac Disease and Air Pollution Vulnerability.
“I am very fortunate to have had so many outstanding people to work with, both during my time at the University of Vermont and here at Joslin,” said Dr. Horton. “One can’t ask for anything more.”
