Newswise — Dr. Barbara Ross-Lee, VP for Health Sciences and Medical Affairs at New York Institute of Technology, is a member of the Institute of Medicine committee that issued a report today on reforming the federal system of financing and oversight of graduate medical education.

“Current graduate medical education governance and financing is not adequately aligned with the needs and evolution of our health care system,” says Ross-Lee, an expert in health policy. “The report offers recommendations for realignment that will put us on a pathway to achieve the aims of a high-performing health system.”

“Unless there’s a realignment, we will continue to produce more specialists than generalists at a time when health care is evolving outside of hospitals into ambulatory sites,” says Ross-Lee.

At NYIT, Ross-Lee oversees the College of Osteopathic Medicine and School of Health Professions. She has an extensive background in health policy issues, and serves as an advisor on primary care, medical education, minority health, women's health and rural health care issues on federal and state committees and organizations. Dr. Ross-Lee also directs the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) Health Policy Fellowship program and Training in Policy Studies (TIPS) programs.
