Newswise — Ephraim Casper, MD, has been appointed Medical Director for the Memorial Sloan Kettering Regional Care Network, comprised of six outpatient suburban locations — three on Long Island; two in Westchester County, New York; and one in Basking Ridge, New Jersey. Dr. Casper will be responsible for maintaining the highest quality of care for the more than 108,000 patients who are seen annually at these facilities.

A resident of Teaneck, New Jersey, Dr. Casper has been a strong presence at MSK’s facilities in the state since 1996. He assumed leadership of the Medical Oncology program at the outpatient facility in Basking Ridge in 2006, where he helped to shape a comprehensive cancer program. Under Dr. Casper’s leadership, medical oncology activity increased by 50 percent and a new model for academic medical oncology practice was introduced at all of MSK’s suburban campuses.

Memorial Sloan Kettering’s regional presence continues to grow, with a new facility scheduled to open in October in Harrison, New York, and a New Jersey facility soon to begin construction in Middletown. More than 25 percent of all outpatient care provided by Memorial Sloan Kettering is now provided at facilities outside of Manhattan.

“We are fortunate that Dr. Casper has agreed to take on this new role. I’m thrilled that he will also see patients at our new campus in Harrison when it opens later this year,” says Richard Barakat, MD, Deputy Physician-in-Chief for the Regional Care Network and MSK Cancer Alliance. “As Medical Director, Dr. Casper will create remarkable opportunities for MSK to increase our provision of care and to expand the role of clinical research in these locations, ultimately benefiting even more patients.”

As Medical Director, Dr. Casper will help ensure that patients living in the tristate area will have easier access to MSK, with more convenient locations, and also will help expand the role of clinical research in locations beyond Manhattan.

Dr. Casper is a board-certified medical oncologist with expertise in treating patients with solid tumors and colorectal, pancreatic, biliary, gastric, and esophageal cancers. After completing his fellowship in Medical Oncology at MSK in 1979, he joined the faculty as a member of what was then the Developmental Chemotherapy Service, and subsequently joined the Gastrointestinal Oncology Service in the Department of Medicine. Dr. Casper has a long history of successful clinical research and has represented MSK on both the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma and Soft Tissue Sarcoma panels.
