Media Advisory: Johns Hopkins Domestic Violence Experts on Ray Rice, Janay Palmer

Three renowned Johns Hopkins University experts on domestic violence are available to address the issue and provide context for the ongoing Ray Rice-Janay Palmer story.

Jacquelyn Campbell PhD, RN, is a professor and Anna D. Wolf Chair at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing and national program director of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholars.Dr. Campbell is a national leader in research and advocacy in the field of intimate partner violence (IPV). She has testified before Congress multiple times on violence against women, and her research led to the creation of a Danger Assessment Tool that helps those in potentially deadly relationships identify the risks and find help. She is the Chair of the Board of Directors for Futures Without Violence and has served on the boards of the House of Ruth Battered Women's Shelter and other shelters. She was also a member of the congressionally appointed U.S. Department of Defense Task Force on Domestic Violence.

Named one of Maryland’s Top 100 Women for 2014, Dr. Campbell recently received the National Family Justice Center Lifetime Achievement Award.

Phyllis Sharps , PhD, RN, is associate dean for Community and Global Programs and director of the Center for Global Nursing at Johns Hopkins Nursing. An expert on maternal and child health nursing, Dr. Sharps directs three health and wellness centers operated by the School of Nursing, provides care in a Baltimore shelter for homeless battered women and their children, and conducts ongoing community-based, participatory research. The overarching focus of her work is on the effects of IPV on the physical and emotional health of pregnant women, infants, and very young children. With a $3.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Sharps is testing the Domestic Violence Enhanced Visitation Program (DOVE), a promising intervention to keep abused women and babies safe from IPV.

Nancy Glass PhD, MPH, RN, is a nurse clinician, professor at the School of Nursing, associate director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Global Health and an Ambassador for ResearchAmerica's Paul G. Rogers Society for Global Health Research. Her research centers on clinical care and intervention in the areas of violence prevention and health disparities.

Dr. Glass is also an international leader on preventing violence, working to empower and protect women in strife-torn areas of the Democratic Republic of Congo, where the rate of violence against women is staggering.
