Newswise — September 17, 2014 (Waterloo, Ontario, Canada) – Einstein described quantum entanglement as “spooky,” but Dr. Subir Sachdev has a different word for it: remarkable.

On Oct. 1, 2014, Sachdev will take the audience on a journey into the world of quantum entanglement and its remarkable connections to black holes, string theory, and the revolutionary superconducting technologies that may be around the corner.

Sachdev, a leading researcher in condensed matter physics, will explore these subjects in a fascinating, accessible talk as part of the Perimeter Institute Public Lecture Series presented by Sun Life Financial.

Quantum entanglement – a powerful connection that can exist between particles even separated by vast distances – is one of the most counterintuitive aspects of quantum theory. Yet new research indicates that entanglement may be key to practical high-temperature superconductors, which promise tremendous advances in technologies spanning medicine, clean energy, and transportation.

During the talk, titled “Quantum Entanglement and Superconductivity,” Sachdev will explain new experiments in high-temperature superconductivity, and will even conduct a live demonstration of levitation using a superconductor. He will also explore the unexpected new connections between these earthbound experiments and the strange quantum behaviour of black holes.

Sachdev is the visiting James Clerk Maxwell Chair in Theoretical Physics at Perimeter Institute, and a faculty member at Harvard University. He was educated in India before attending MIT and Harvard to earn a PhD degree in theoretical physics. Sachdev’s 1999 book, Quantum Phase Transitions, has been described as “required reading for any budding theorist.”

Sachdev’s PI Public Lecture will be webcast live on Wednesday Oct. 1, 2014 at 7:00 PM ET. Online viewers can pose questions to Sachdev by tweeting @Perimeter using the hashtag #piLIVE. ABOUT PERIMETER INSTITUTEPerimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics (PI) is an independent, non-profit, scientific research organization working to advance our understanding of physical laws and develop new ideas about the very essence of space, time, matter, and information. Located in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, PI also provides a wide array of research training and educational outreach activities to nurture scientific talent and share the importance of discovery and innovation among students, teachers, and the general public. In partnership with the Governments of Ontario and Canada, PI is a successful example of public-private collaboration in scientific research, training, and outreach. http://www.perimeterinstitute.ca/ @Perimeter
