Newswise — While the Golseth Young Investigator Award is meant to showcase outstanding research by physicians in early practice, it is rare that the recipient is as young as this year’s Irina Shklyar, MD, of New Haven, CT. She completed the research as a medical student while doing a year-long research fellowship at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. She is currently completing her internal medicine internship at Yale-New Haven Hospital (Yale School of Medicine) before pursuing a neurology residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (Harvard Medical School) in Boston.
The Golseth Young Investigator Award is granted by the AANEM Foundation for Research & Education. A committee evaluated the applications and chose Dr. Shklyar as the 2014 recipient for her abstract entitled, “Quantitative Ultrasound Backscatter Analysis for the Evaluation of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.”
She is currently completing her internal medicine internship at Yale-New Haven Hospital (Yale School of Medicine) before pursuing a neurology residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (Harvard Medical School) in Boston.
“In the lab, I studied potential outcome measures, including quantitative ultrasound and electrical impedance myography, with applications for future Duchenne muscular dystrophy clinical trials. This is an exciting time to develop objective, safe, and sensitive measures of disease progression as new candidate therapies for DMD emerge in the pipeline,” said Dr. Shklyar. “I could not be more honored or thrilled to receive this award or to bring attention to potential biomarkers of DMD disease progression. This award is a testament to not only my efforts, but those of my PI Dr. Seward Rutkove, our collaborator Dr. Craig Zaidman, and the rest of the Rutkove lab.”
The runner-up for the Golseth Award is Daniel P. Schwartz, MD, of Washington, D.C., for his abstract entitled, “Electrical Impedance Myography Discriminates Congenital Muscular Dystrophy from Controls.”
The Golseth Young Investigator Award, honoring AANEM Founding Member, Dr. James Golseth, is presented annually for original research in NM and EDX medicine. The Foundation has been funding the award since 1998.
