Newswise — The H.H. Franklin Center for Supply Chain Management at Syracuse University’s Martin J. Whitman School of Management honored Cummins Inc. for its leadership and innovation in supply chain management (SCM) during the 65th Annual Harry E. Salzberg Memorial Program on October 2. During the event, industry executives from leading corporations shared insights into trends, advancements and innovation in the fields of SCM, transportation and logistics.

Established in 1949, the annual Salzberg event is a central component of Whitman’s Franklin Center for Supply Chain Management, which is consistently recognized among the best in the country by leading publications and organizations.

“The Salzberg program enriches the student learning experience by fostering collaboration among students, faculty, staff and practitioners to enhance supply chain education and advance the industry,” said Burak Kazaz, associate professor of supply chain and executive director of the Franklin Center. “It gives us an opportunity to study and recognize innovators in the industry, while engaging students with thought-leaders who are setting trends and improving processes in this essential and ever-changing area of business.”

A highlight of the program each year is the presentation of the Salzberg Award, the oldest supply chain award in the U.S., created in 1949 with a gift from Murray Salzberg in honor of his father Harry E. Salzberg, a transportation entrepreneur. The award recognizes individuals and organizations for their contributions in transportation, logistics and supply chain management.

Cummins Inc., a global leader in the design, manufacturing, distribution and service of diesel and natural gas engines and related technologies, was selected as the 2014 Salzberg Award recipient. Theodosia Rush, Cummins’ executive director of global supply chain planning and logistics, accepted the Salzberg medallion on behalf of the company.

This year’s Salzberg program also included an expert panel discussion on the logistics of omni-channel. David Aquino, senior vice president of supply chain, operations and IT at Barco Uniforms, moderated the discussion. Esteemed panelists included Jason Diaz, founder of TaxiPass and GetRide, and Rod Gallaway, vice president of logistics strategy, global design, engineering and projects at Staples, Inc. Bala Ganesh, director of retail segment marketing at UPS, also provided an in-depth presentation about UPS’ plans to provide logistics services supporting omni-channel efforts of its customers.

The Salzberg event showcased the best and brightest of Whitman’s undergraduate and graduate SCM students. Cory Sanderson ’15 M.S., Alice Chen ’15 B.S., Prashanth Kammili ’16 MBA, Dinesh Ganesan ’15 M.S. and Puneet Kanchi ’16 MBA delivered a round-table presentation on how omni-channels are transforming the retail paradigms. The Zinsmeister Award was presented to Kenneth Dick ’15 B.S., and Lauryn Nicole Kulkarni ’15 B.S. received the Robert H. Brethen Prize. Both awards recognize outstanding academic achievement.
