Andrew Su, Ph.D., is available to comment on the use of crowdsourcing and “mining” big data to advance health science. In his lab at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI), Su uses the tools of computer science to extract important data from studies on topics from cancer to genetics.

Su is also the creator of BioGPS, a publicly accessible web tool researchers can use to find information on specific genes, and GeneWiki, a project to help scientists comb through the troves of data from the Human Genome Project and later studies.

“Today’s biomedical research is generating a huge amount of data,” said Su in a recent interview. “In fields such as genomics and proteomics, researchers require increasingly powerful tools to make sense of their findings and extract valuable information that could lead to improvements in human health.”

Su currently co-directs an NIH Center for Excellence for Big Data Computing and is an associate professor at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California.
