David Levitsky, a Cornell University professor of nutrition and psychology, says the targeting of major retailers selling allegedly faulty dietary supplements could lead to action that would stop what he calls “a game of Whack-A-Mole” between the Federal Trade Commission and small manufacturers.

Levitsky says:

“It’s About Time.

“The scientific community has been aware for a long time of the false claims, the impossible promises, and the downright lies sold to the American people in the form of pills, notions, and medicinal foods. The Federal Trade Commission and the New York state attorney general’s office has finally decided to take action. Instead of going after the thousands of small companies that produce these substances, they are now going after the major retailers such as Target, WalMart, Walgreens and GNC. It is about time.

“Shutting down the small manufacturers of these worthless products is like playing a game of Whack-A-Mole where every time the FTC closes one, the products re-emerge under a different name. Best of all, the FTC is going after those who sell to the poor and less educated and those who can least afford them.”
