Newswise — MAYWOOD, Ill. – Loyola University Medical Center will once again have a strong research presence at the annual meeting of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP).
Loyola researchers will present 25 peer-reviewed studies in anatomic pathology during the USCAP 2015 meeting March 21 – 27 in Boston. It’s the largest and most prestigious pathology meeting in the world.
Pathology studies are leading to new ways to diagnose and understand disease, and new, personalized treatments targeted to individual patients.
“It is a very exciting time in the field,” said Eva M. Wojcik, MD, chair of the Department of Pathology of Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine.
Dr. Wojcik noted that pathology residents and fellows are first authors or co-authors on 15 of the Loyola studies. “One of our missions as an academic medical center is to train physician scientists,” Dr. Wojcik said.
Loyola’s Department of Pathology handles more than 2.5 million inpatient and outpatient procedures per year, including about 25,000 surgical specimens and 22,000 cytology specimens. The research-intensive department is staffed with nationally and internationally recognized scientists conducting basic research into the mechanisms of disease, and clinical pathologists conducting applied research to bring new technologies to market.
