David Coates, a Wake Forest University professor of political science/Anglo-American studies and the author of the new book America in the Shadow of Empires, compellingly compares the development and inevitable failure of four of history’s greatest empires to the current American situation, especially foreign military deployment.

We desperately need a national conversation, he says in a post this week, about the appropriate direction of our foreign policy, and about the adverse impact on conditions at home of excessive military activity overseas. As the military campaign against ISIS builds in both Syria and Iraq, that national conversation becomes ever more essential.

Coates is the author of numerous books, articles and blog posts. His political and historical expertise also encompasses the American economy, trade agreements, healthcare, education, the emerging presidential candidates, and relationships with our allies, particularly the U.K.

Coates’s broad scholarship and research would make him an excellent interviewee or panelist on the subject of American Mideast involvement. More information about him is at DavidCoates.net.

Wake Forest can provide high-quality audio for radio interviews, and has access to a TV flash studio.
