Newswise — LA JOLLA, Calif., and ORLANDO, Fla., April 23, 2015 – Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute (Sanford-Burnham) today announced the election of two new members to its Board of Trustees. The Board will grow to 23 members with the addition of the following new Trustees:

Stuart A. Tanz of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., and Toronto, Ontario, Canada, is President and CEO of Retail Opportunity Investments Corporation, a real estate firm managing properties throughout Southern California. He was formally Chairman, CEO, and President of Pan Pacific Retail Properties, Inc., and has been involved at the advisory-board level for numerous business and charitable organizations. Tanz previously served on Sanford-Burnham’s Board of Trustees from 2005 until 2011. The Tanz family has an interest in neurodegenerative research and last year provided the Institute with a philanthropic gift to establish an international collaboration between Sanford-Burnham and the Tanz Centre for Research in Neurodegenerative Diseases at the University of Toronto.

Carol G. Gallagher, Pharm. D., of Del Mar, Calif., is a partner at New Enterprise Associates, a venture capital firm specializing in health care and technology investments. Gallagher has an impressive track record in the pharmaceutical industry, serving on the board of Aragon Pharmaceuticals and as President and CEO of Calistoga Pharmaceuticals. During her tenure with Calistoga Pharmaceuticals, Gallagher led the company to a successful acquisition by Gilead Sciences. In addition, she is an active philanthropist who supports a range of charitable causes.
